In Between was an unexpected exhibition that emerged between larger bodies of work in Syed Ali Shah’s developing practice. Presented at Virgin Hotels Chicago, the exhibition came together almost spontaneously, creating an opportunity for Shah to step outside the trajectory of his previous work and introduce a selection of paintings in progress to a new Chicago audience. Rather than beginning as a fully planned exhibition, In Between became a moment of transition—an unanticipated space to show work that was still developing and to see how it could exist within a different environment and audience.
